General Data > Polymer Types

The word 'polymer' is used to describe a material consisting of a large molecule composed of repeating structural units, usually connected by covalent bonds. While the word 'polymer' is generally used to describe plastic, the word actually relates to a large class of natural and synthetic materials with a variety of properties.

The list below shows many polymers, their abbreviated coding and their type (thermoplastic or thermosetting). Thermoplastics are polymers that can turn into to a liquid when heated and freeze to a glassy state when cooled. A thermosetting polymer cannot be re-melted and remains firm when heated.

This list may be of use when identifying a type of polymer from its code or when selecting a thermosetting or thermoplastic polymer for investigation.
