It consists of a small bar magnet encapsulated in glass or plastic, allowing it to be chemically inert.
The stir bar is placed into a flask or beaker of liquid on the deck of the stirrer. When the rotating magnet in the stirrer is started up, the stir bar will follow the rotations, effectively stirring the liquid.
