The Salters' Institute, in collaboration with the Association for Science Education, the Institute of Biology, the Institute of Physics, The Royal Society and The Royal Society of Chemistry, has established the first National Awards for Science Technicians. The awards are open to science technicians in schools and colleges who have a total of 5 or more years' experience (either full-time or part-time).
The Awards are open to:
- Science Technicians in schools and colleges for students up to 18
- Science Technicians with 5 or more years experience
The Criteria for the Awards are:
- The range and depth of the technician's influence on decisions in the department, developing experiments, involvement in schemes of work, setting standards including safety, stock control, working in classrooms, advising teachers, NQTs, PGCE students and students.
- Being systematic about their own development (where possible) e.g. attending courses, becoming an expert in ICT
- Being systematic about managing and developing the skills of other technicians in their institution, where applicable
- Being key people in innovations and activities linked to the science department e.g. clubs, fieldwork visits
- Interacting with other technicians e.g. from other schools, local groups, ASE
- Helping the school in other ways e.g. participating in the general life of the school
